“Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24

Last night I took three of my kids to a Skillet concert in Colorado Springs. While there, I was reminded of one thing that I love about this band: even though they are a Christian band with Christian lyrics and a Christian message, there is always a large number of unbelievers in the audience. Why would people who have no faith in Christ show up at a blatantly Christian concert? It’s simple: the band is great at what they do! Skillet is an awesome rock band that puts on an incredible show. Because of that, they get to travel all around the country showing Christ to people who are lost. In true rock ‘n’ roll fashion, they unapologetically share their faith and in no way try to placate those who do not believe. But their pursuit of excellence in their calling is honoring to God and it furthers his Kingdom.

This truth is not just applicable to rock bands. Each one of us is called to work with all our heart in whatever situation God has placed us. If you are a student, be the kind of student that makes the classroom a better place. If you are a store associate, be the kind of employee that brightens the customer’s day. If you are a laborer, execute your task with pride. If you are a first responder, serve with both bravery and compassion. Whatever your job is, give it your all. We are not trying to please men; we work for God. But God is honored, and the Gospel is heard wherever we live out our faith with boldness and excellence.

Almighty God, we know that above all else, we serve You. Let us take on every task with a mind firmly set on pleasing You. Empower us to live lives of excellence wherever we are. We desire for people to see and know You in our daily work.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
