“You will keep in perfect peace the mind that is dependent on You, for it is trusting in You.” – Isaiah 26:3 (HCSB)
I often hear talk in Christian circles about “trusting God,” but what exactly do we mean when we say that? Often, what we mean is that we have a grand plan for our lives and at those moments when our plan does not work out, we trust God to get us through until we can start working out our plan again. Other times, it simply means we recognize God is there, even if that truth does not make much difference in the way we live. Isaiah 26:3 may seem redundant at first, but I believe it actually holds an important key for what it means to “trust in the Lord”; trusting in the Lord is about dependence. How many of us can honestly say that we live in such a way that our every moment is dependent upon the Lord? We will use clichés like “He holds the whole word in His hands.” But can we honestly say, “Without time in His word, quiet time with Him, and constant prayer, I could not function today.” In our world, that sentence may sound like weakness. However, in the Kingdom of God, living this way holds incredible power. According to Isaiah 26:3, living this way provides the one thing that we all truly desire: Perfect Peace.
Lord, let us not simply recognize You, but develop such a relationship with You that our whole selves are dependent upon You every day, truly trusting in You to provide the peace we desire.
