“Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil. Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred.” – Proverbs 15:16-17

What is it that you need to be happy? I’m sure that if we sat down to coffee together, talking face-to-face, you could probably give me a very “spiritual” answer. You would probably say things like, “as long as my family is healthy and happy.” Or “as long as I have Jesus, I have everything I need.” But search your heart and ask yourself; do you really live that way? Do we really live every day enjoying the love of our friends and family? Do we really live every day like a deeper knowledge of and intimacy with God is the greatest thing we could accomplish? If you are unsure of your answer to these questions, take a moment and really ask yourself what it is that occupies your thoughts throughout most of your day…because that is probably the thing you believe will truly bring you peace and happiness.

The truth of Proverbs 15:16-17 should change our daily pursuits. If the fear of the Lord is better than wealth, than we should spend a lot more time honoring him than we do pursuing money. If loving relationships are more important than abundance within our household, than we should spend a lot more time investing in our friends and family than we do pursuing material things. When asked a serious question like, “What is it that you need to be happy?” let’s not just give the spiritual answer; let’s live the spiritual answer.

Father, give us the wisdom and the passion to pursue what is truly important in life.

In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
