“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone.’” – Genesis 2:18
We need each other. The Bible is so clear on this from cover to cover. In the book of Genesis, God states that each creation is good as he creates it. But then, in a shocking moment, he creates something and says it is not good; “It is not good for man to be alone.” In the book of Revelation, the picture of heaven is God’s people all singing his praises together as one enormous choir. In the Old Testament, the story of God is told through one big family: the nation of Israel. Throughout all the New Testament, we are told the Church is a family relying on one another to fulfill their different roles…or even a body that is completely dependent on each of the different parts to live a healthy and productive life.
If this is the case, then why do we seem to think isolating ourselves during the difficult times is going to somehow solve our problems? Or, when things are going well, why do we think they will continue to go well as we withdraw from God’s people and simply pursue our own interests? As a pastor, I have seen an incredible amount of pain in individuals, marriages, and families because they have refused to accept the truth that God has built us for community. If you have a church family, make meeting with them a priority. If you do not have a church family, finding one should be on the very top of your to-do list today. If you are out of fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ, then you are outside of God’s will for your life and you are making things so much more difficult than they need to be. Meeting together with God’s people is always worth the sacrifices you must make to accomplish it.
Heavenly Father, give us a passion for Your people. Let us encourage and be encouraged. Teach us to truly love through our time together. We recognize today that it is not good for us to be alone.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
