“When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’” – Luke 3:21-22
Twice in the book of 1 John, chapter 4, we are told that “God is love” (vv.8 & 16). But love assumes a relationship. If we look at the definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13, it is clear that love must be directed toward someone. So how could God be love before the foundation of the world; before anything or anyone else existed? The answer to that question is the Trinity. God Himself existed in three persons long before anything else was created. Genesis 1:2 tells us that the Holy Spirit was there at creation. And John chapter 1 teaches us that Jesus was not only there at the creation, but that the world was created through Him. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are in a loving relationship and in perfect oneness from eternity to eternity. And it is only from this perfect love of God that we can learn to truly love one another.
Father, teach us Your love so that we can learn to love one another and love You with the perfect and pure love that only comes from heaven above.
