“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.” – Psalm 27:4
There is a well known story in the book of Luke, chapter 10, where Jesus is visiting the sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha is bustling about the house trying to get everything done, concerned about a million different things. However, Mary is simply sitting and spending time with Jesus. When Martha gets upset about this, Jesus tells her, “Martha, you are worried about so many things, but only one thing is truly important. Mary has made the right choice.” As you get your list ready of everything you have to get done today, you may be frustrated with that story. You may relate to Martha much more than Mary. But let me tell you this morning; only one thing is truly of utmost importance. Choose to be with Jesus.
One great way to solve the problem of overwhelmed distraction is to change what we ask for in prayer. As we go about our day, we so often ask God to bless all our plans. We have a lot to do, and we want Him to make it all successful. But try praying the prayer of Psalm 27:4 each morning instead. Simply pray, “Lord, I only have one request today: Please let me dwell in Your presence and gaze on Your glory all day long.” When we do this, plans still get carried out and tasks still get accomplished, but in the midst of it, we experience the very presence of God. You are probably worried about a lot of things today. Please stop, take a moment, and sit at the feet of Jesus. It is truly the greatest thing you can accomplish today.
Heavenly Father and All Mighty God, we have one request and one request only this morning: Let us dwell in Your presence and see Your glory all day long.
