“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.” – Galatians 5:13
It is true that life is often unfair. Bad things happen to good people, and many Godly men and women suffer unjustly. However, it is also true that we as Christians often bring a lot of pain and suffering into our own lives because we live in ways contrary to God’s will. When we come to Jesus, we must understand that our Salvation rests solely on Christ’s Death and Resurrection, and never on our own good works. However, we can never take this truth to mean that it no longer matters how we live our lives. We cannot use this freedom in Christ as an excuse for sin. Even when our lives are sealed for eternity in Jesus, choosing to indulge in sin will always cause great pain for us and the people around us. Our guiding principle for actions should never be our self-centered sinful nature, but love for others. It is precisely because God has shown us such great love through Jesus Christ that we should respond by using that freedom to show love to others. Father, help us to comprehend more clearly the depths of Your love so that we can begin to be motivated by that love in all our actions.
