“Because I, the Lord, have not changed, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.” – Malachi 3:6

When we read through the stories of the Old Testament, or even the New Testament, it can be hard to relate. Those people lived in such an incredibly different time and place than we do. This disconnect can be so big at times that we have trouble relating the Bible to our lives. However, there are two unchanging truths that should keep us closely connected to the Scripture. The first is that God does not change. Even though the culture of the Bible is completely different, the God of the Bible is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We walk and talk with the very same Father, we are empowered by the very same Holy Spirit, and we are rescued by the very same Messiah as all those we read about in Scripture…which brings me to the second unchanging truth:

Sin. Sin has not changed. The envy, greed, anger, lust, etc. of the Bible are the very same evils we deal with today. Just as I can see the unchanging character of God in the stories of the Bible, I can see the unchanging darkness of the human heart. Surely in the ugliest story of the Old or New Testaments we can find equally ugly stories in our modern times. And surely within the struggles of our spiritual ancestors, we can find the same struggles within our own heart. This difficult truth makes the first truth that much more beautiful. We are not destroyed, but instead are saved, because the God who was working to bring about salvation through the Messiah is the very same God working you rescue me from my daily battles. The Lord does not change, so I am not destroyed! Praise the Lord!

Almighty God, we rejoice that You are immutable. Thank You for remaining true to Your promises and consistent in Your plan of Salvation. Rescue us from the bondage of sin and fulfill Your story of Salvation in every one of our lives.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
