“One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound wisdom.” – Proverbs 18:1
Since I broke both of my shoulders and tore several tendons and ligaments, they have lost a lot of elasticity. This means that, though they are often stiff and sore, they are also prone to dislocation if I am not careful. However, there is one thing that really helps stabilize them; regular weightlifting. Now, because it is so helpful, you would think I keep a great regimen and make sure I’m hitting the weights several times a week. Well, I wish that were true. The truth is I am often lazy. If you think about it, it really makes no sense; my selfish desire of wanting to sit around and relax is actually causing me harm. By putting what I want first, I am hurting me.
Most Christians don’t realize it, but fellowship is a spiritual discipline. Missing church services, Bible studies, and events often happens because we are putting our own selfish desires first. But this kind of life is a rebellion against all sound wisdom. Time with brothers and sisters is vital to your walk with Christ. You cannot face this dark and difficult world without it. This truth is especially important to remember as we enter the summer months. There are so many activities for our kids, so many fun trips we have planned, and so much work to be done at the house. But selfish desires that isolate you from the Church will only end up harming you in the end. So set aside a couple hours on Sunday mornings (even if it means finding a church in the town you are visiting on vacation), volunteer for an outreach program, and attend events. You need the Church. The Church needs you. We all need a stronger relationship with God.
Heavenly Father, show us the eternal value of fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ. Strengthen us to overcome our selfish desires and practice the spiritual discipline of fellowship.
In Christ’s Service,
