“Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24
Today we are right in the middle of our Vacation Bible School. The church is buzzing with excitement…close to 100 kids, 50 adult volunteers and 20 youth volunteers have been in and out of here over the last three days, and we still have two more days to go! One of the wonderful things about VBS is the enormous impact that can be made on the life of these children. The truths they hear this week can influence them for years to come, and possibly into eternity! That is why we commit to all the sacrifices and put in all the work to make this happen.
God is doing another work, however, that we often overlook. He is working in incredible ways in the hearts of every one of these volunteers. I have seen people grow tremendously and their relationship with God flourish because of their service during this week. When we work for God, we often think of some future reward (which we do receive). But the treasure that we store up in heaven is accessible now. A heart that serves God, loves his people, and invests in his Church is a heart that is moving further and further away from the fear, anxiety, and pain of this world and closer to the confidence, peace, and joy that exists in God’s presence. If you feel far from God on a regular basis, maybe you need to consider how you can better serve him. I think you may be surprised with the rewards you reap in your body, mind, and soul here on earth, in addition to the treasures you are storing up in heaven. I know our VBS volunteers are experiencing this!
Lord, help us to see that the best life we can live here on earth is a life lived in service to You. I praise You for the incredible men, women, and youth who are experiencing this today at our church. Please let all of Your people recognize and live in this beautiful truth.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
