“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” – 1 Chronicles 28:9

David was known as a “man after God’s own heart.” He was far from perfect, but he was a man who passionately pursued his relationship with God through good times and bad. His prayers which are recorded in many of the psalms have served to strengthen believers for thousands of years. And the things God spoke to him are still teaching us today. So when it came time for Solomon, David’s son, to become king, he could simply sit back and enjoy everything that David did, right? Wrong! David’s final words to his son were not, “I have set you up with a perfect relationship with God, now just sit back and enjoy it.” Instead, David essentially said, “your relationship with God is on your own shoulders. If you want to know God, you must seek him! I cannot do it for you.” You see, each one of us is responsible for our own relationship to God. It must begin with a personal profession of faith in Jesus Christ, and it must grow through our personal time with Him. Don’t be fooled; your parents, your pastor, your spouse, your very “Christian” friend…none of them can develop your relationship with God for you. So if your relationship with God is not where you want it to be today, then I ask you; what are you doing to change it? Father, fill us with David’s passion and desire to draw close to You through every season of life.
