“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure or weighed the mountains on a balance and the hills on the scales?” – Isaiah 40:12
My father always had large, strong hands. He was a hard worker, and it showed in his thick, weathered fingers and palms. I can vividly remember how it felt, as a child, when I held my dad’s hand. Those hands were an extension of his massive strength and protective love. When I was little, weak, and scared, I always felt safe in my dad’s big, strong hands. In Isaiah 40, the prophet gives us an extensive picture illustrating how big God is. One of the pictures he uses is imagining God holding the waters of the earth in the palm of his hand. Do you realize that 71% of the earth’s surface is covered in water? That doesn’t include the water under the ground, in the air, and even in every one of us! And our God just scoops it all up in his hand! That’s a big hand!!!
Now with that incredible picture in mind, look at the verse that comes right before it – “He protects his flock like a shepherd; he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing.” (Isaiah 40:11) Those huge hands hold each and every one of us. Don’t be afraid, brothers and sisters, no matter what you are facing. The one who holds the waters in the palm of his hands also scoops you up into his arms and leads you along your path. Find peace today in the huge hands of our God.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You not only promise protection for Your children, but have all the strength necessary to provide it. Keep us safe along this treacherous road of life.
In Christ’s Service,
