“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” – Romans 5:5
Last Friday my wife and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary. Our marriage is richer and deeper today than it has ever been. Over the years we have come to know each other better, fought side-by-side through intense trials, and shared the most beautiful moments in life together. Even though my wife gave all of herself to me on that beautiful July day 27 years ago (I did not receive her piece-by-piece over the years), every day I learn more of all that entails. Back then I did not understand what an overwhelming gift that was and, even now, I am realizing I have so much more to experience with this amazing woman.
This reminded me of Romans 5:5. The word “poured out” means to completely empty something out and, in this verse, it is in the perfect tense in Greek. This means an action that is complete. God’s love has been “poured out” or completely emptied into you the moment you came to Jesus Christ. The same is true of his Spirit (Acts 2:17). We often think, “If only I had more of God’s love or Spirit!” But the truth is, he has already given you all of it (beware anyone who tells you that you need them to give you more of God’s Spirit!). God’s gift to you is complete. What you really need is to spend more time getting to know him…through beautiful moments and intense trials. On the day you came to Christ, you received all you will ever need. Now you just need to take full advantage of this truth by spending every moment with him.
Almighty God, though we cannot fully comprehend it, we thank You for the pouring out of Yourself into us. Help us begin to see the incredible beauty of this gift so that we may make the most of our relationship with You every day.
