This is what the Lord says: Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths, “Which is the way to what is good?” Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they protested, “We won’t!” – Jeremiah 6:16
Our world is obsessed with the “latest and greatest” ideas. We are fascinated by whatever is new, without usually giving much thought to whether or not it is actually good. It is true that modern technology has done some amazing things for our lives. However, if we look back at the history of medicine in our country, for instance, we will see that many new innovations have ended up causing more harm than good. The same thing can be said about food additives, building materials, and synthetics. Our rush to accept the latest “advancement” has often caused us great pain. Yet we still love the “new,” whatever it is.
Because of this, I think it is often very hard for people to accept the fact that the ancient truths of the Bible are, in fact, absolute Truth. When it comes to the good path that leads to peace, rest, and eternal salvation for our souls, there is no need to find the latest teaching. All we need for life, and life eternal, is found in the pages of the ancient book we call “the Bible.” So, as you begin this year, wrestling with what to do or which way to go, stop seeking the latest guru or newest idea. Instead, seek the teachers who teach this ancient truth. Read the book that holds the unchanging words of life.
Heavenly Father, open our eyes to the Truth. Protect us from the lie of the enemy that proclaims real truth is found in the latest and greatest ideas. When we stand at the crossroads, give us the wisdom to look to the ancient path – lead us on the way of life everlasting.
