“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” – Psalm 118:8-9
Last night our current president gave his State of the Union Address. This morning, social media was lit up with both praise and condemnation. I know we often tie our Christianity closely to a political party or a political leader. Unfortunately, this is a slippery slope. As I read through the comments that many of my friends made online, I can say that there were very good and godly men and women on both sides of the debate. The truth is, even a great leader is going to be wrong on some issues, and even the worst leader is going to get a few things right.
This is precisely why we are taught in Psalm 118 to put our hope in one place and one place alone; The LORD of all creation. Can I be perfectly honest for a moment? If you think our current president is the answer to America’s problems, you are mistaken. And if you think our current president is the cause of America’s problems, you are mistaken. The truth is, if your hope rises and falls on the men and women who are seated in Washington D.C., then you are mistaken. I understand that this current political climate can be incredibly discouraging at times. So as you look for hope, let me remind you of another psalm;
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” – Psalm 121:1-2
