In my late 20’s, I had graduated from college, gotten married, bought a house, had my first child, and started work on my Master’s degree. These were all things I hoped to do and worked hard to accomplish. But during that time, I was amazed when I ran into old friends from high school who seemed to be stuck at about 17 years old. They had not changed at all. Life was still just a party. I always wondered to myself, “why have they not changed since we were kids?” The answer? They didn’t want to. They had no desire to do anything more or be anything more than who they were back then.
That thought is probably pretty sad for most of us. But I think many Christians are stuck in that exact same way when it comes to their relationship with God. I have talked with believers from 20 years ago that seem to have never grown in their relationship with God. Psalm 42 gives a beautiful picture of someone who truly desires to know God better each and every day. There is a deep thirst to grow closer to him. If you find you are never growing in your relationship with God, maybe it is time to start looking inside. Do you really want to grow? Do you truly thirst for a deeper relationship with God? When you do, you will be excited for any and every opportunity to spend time knowing him better.
Heavenly Father, as a traveler lost in the desert longs for every drop of water he can get, help us to deeply thirst for You. Fill us with a desire to know You more and more deeply every moment of every day.
