“Then the Lord spoke to Moses: ‘Tell the Israelites: When someone sins unintentionally against any of the Lord’s commands and does anything prohibited by them…’” – Leviticus 4:1-2
I heard the funniest story the other day. A worship leader friend of mine said he had a dream where he finished leading worship at the church and then went into his office and realized he didn’t have any pants on the whole time. We have all had a similar feeling at some point; gave a speech and then realized we had mustard all over our shirt, made a great point and then realized we were wrong, or finished a big project only to realize we did it completely backwards. I think this is one of the ways God keeps us humble, reminding us of our fallenness.
There is a very interesting passage in Leviticus 4. God tells Moses what the people must do to atone for sins that they commit unintentionally. Many of us would probably define sin as an intentional rebellion against God. But the truth is, we are so broken in the very depths of our nature, that we unintentionally defy God. It is incredibly humbling to think we are rebelling against God even when we don’t realize it. What a horrible situation we are in! We could never atone for the sins we commit on purpose, let alone the ones we are not even aware of! “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25)
Almighty God I am so unworthy! Loving Heavenly Father, You are so full of grace and mercy! Thank You for rescuing me from my stubborn rebellion. And thank You for saving me from my ignorant sinfulness.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
