“The Lord spoke to Moses: ‘Speak to the entire Israelite community and tell them: Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’” – Leviticus 19:1-2

If you have ever spent any time reading the book of Leviticus (it is a daunting task!) you will realize that God had an incredible standard that he expected his people to live up to. If they were going to be called “The People of God” and were going to be his special nation, then their righteousness was going to have to far surpass anything the world had ever seen before. As daunting as it is, spending time in Leviticus can help us realize the sheer magnitude of what it is Christ accomplished on the Cross. He has forgiven every one of those sins and more, making a holy people for himself out of miserable sinners like you and me.

Matthew Henry once said, “It is to the glory of a great God to forgive great sins.” Even if we would not say it out loud, all of us, at one time or another, have had sins in our lives that we see as being unforgivable. But to make that statement is to say Jesus has fallen short in his work. To view your sins as “too much” is to question God’s abilities to forgive. God can forgive those sins. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, he has already forgiven those sins. It is to his glory to do so.

Almighty God, righteous Father, and merciful Savior, we come today to ask for Your forgiveness. We understand that our sins are serious and numerous. We understand that those sins must be punished. But we also know that Jesus Christ’s work on the Cross is perfect and complete; taking the punishment that we deserve. Wash our sins away, even the great big ones, through the blood of Jesus Christ. Make us Your perfect people, set to live with You for all eternity.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
