“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ.” – Philippians 1:12-13
One huge mistake we often make in our evangelism is the assumption that everyone has their mind made up about the Gospel. We see people in two groups: those who believe the Gospel and those who are opposed to it. When we do this, we think every conversation with a non-believer needs to be some kind of well-prepared argument or sales pitch. However, the truth is, the vast majority of people have not made up their mind…many have never even thought about it. I am in a unique position because I cannot avoid Gospel conversations, even if I wanted to. As soon as someone finds out that I am a pastor, the questions begin. But almost none of those questions are adversarial. They are truly curious about what I believe and why.
We are growing closer to a time when no Christian can avoid Gospel conversations. More and more, the media is presenting a very skewed picture of Christianity. But believe it or not, this attempt to make Christians the enemy has not resulted in the average person hating us. Instead, it makes them curious. Satan’s scheme to silence the believer has only made the non-believer more interested in the truth about who we actually are. Just as Paul’s imprisonment resulted in the salvation of many, the current attack on Christianity can result in many coming to Christ. But for that to happen we must be not only willing, but excited to share our true faith with the people around us. They want to know…they need to know! I encourage you to no longer see your unbelieving neighbor as an adversary you must win over, but see them as a lost soul searching for Truth. You have the Truth they are so desperately searching for. Go and share the Good News!
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing the Christian faith to the forefront of our society. Let us take this opportunity to share the Truth so that we may see the salvation of all those around us.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
