“And your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.” – Ephesians 6:15
Depression can be a serious problem after the holidays. Maybe it is exhaustion from all the activities, maybe it is saying good-bye to family, maybe it is getting back into the normal routine, or maybe it is looking at an empty bank account after all the all the gifts have been bought and opened. Whatever the reason, depression this time of year is very common. But this shouldn’t be the case. When we have spent so much time remembering and celebrating Christ coming into the world, we should have great strength for the days ahead.
Ephesians 6:15 is often referred to as a verse encouraging us to go out and share the Gospel. Even though it is always a good idea to share the Gospel, in this context, Paul is talking about our personal battle with Satan, not our interactions with those around us. Depression is a serious, and often crippling attack from the enemy. One of the best ways to be ready for this battle is to always be mindful of the Gospel. We should keep the Good News of Jesus Christ in front of us at all times. So, this year I want to encourage you to be creative in how you can keep the Christmas story in front of you all year long. Keep a nativity scene set up in your house, stick one of you favorite Christmas cards on the fridge, or hang an angel ornament in the kitchen window. But find some way to make sure your feet are constantly fitted with the Gospel. Don’t let the enemy catch you off guard this year!
Loving Heavenly Father, keep the manger before us at all times. Let the joy of this Christmas season sustain us throughout the year. Protect us from the attacks of our enemy by keeping us mindful of the sacrifice of Your Son.
In Christ’s Service,
