“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:21
Christmas has become a very convoluted holiday that is “about” a whole variety of things depending on who you ask. Some say it is all about family. Some say it is all about generosity. Some may even say it is all about consumerism and greed. But as cliché as it may sound, Christmas is about one thing and one thing only: Jesus.
However, to say Christmas is all about Jesus brings with it some theological implications. First, the name “Jesus” is actually a Greek version of the Hebrew name “Joshua.” And Joshua means, “Yahweh saves.” The work that Jesus came to accomplish can only be done by God Himself in the flesh. Secondly, Matthew 1:21 assumes something; that we need saved. Romans 3:23 tells us that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s plan for us. And Romans 6:23 clearly tells us that the price to be paid for sin is death – eternal separation from God. Jesus Christ stepping into this world is the grand turning point in the story of our sin; the turning point that all creation has been anticipating.
So this Christmas, spend time with family, help those who are less fortunate, and buy presents for those you love. But in the midst of it all, don’t ever forget to celebrate the most incredible and joyful gift that has ever been given. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this; while we were still sinners Christ (lived and) died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
Heavenly Father, we could never thank You enough for the incredible gift of Your son Jesus Christ, who was born as an innocent baby on that Christmas night, knowing full well his destination was the cross for our salvation. Please keep this on the forefront of our minds this Christmas season.
In Christ’s Service,
