“He must increase, but I must decrease. The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms. The one who comes from heaven is above all.” – John 3:30-31
To celebrate our 23rd anniversary my wife and I went to Red Rocks Amphitheatre last night and saw several popular Christian artists. As I watched the bands perform it took me back to my college days when I lead worship on campus and played with my own Christian band. I had dreams of being that guy up on stage at Red Rocks singing to thousands of people. I sometimes wonder why God did not allow me to follow that path in life. But in the words of one song last night, I realized why he may have kept me from it: “I want the world to see nobody but Jesus.” If I am honest with myself it was, at least to some extent, my desire for the world to see Shane.
We often think that it is impossible for a “nobody” like me to make a lasting difference in this world. But that kind of thinking is me-centered, not Christ-centered. Jesus doesn’t need you to be a celebrity. He needs you to be faithful right where he has you. No one may ever know your name, but you have lived the greatest life possible if, through you, they know the name of Jesus.
Almighty God, get our eyes off ourselves. Let us find all our significance in the beautiful privilege of proclaiming the Name of Jesus to all those around us, even if it means no one will ever remember our name.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon
