“For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” – Romans 1:18

As a little experiment today, I typed into the search bar on my web browser, “Verses about God’s…” and let it make some suggestions for me. The autofill brought up, in this order, “love, faithfulness, sovereignty, protection, plan, provision, promises, goodness, timing, character.” I went ahead and entered a “w” to see where that would lead. I got, “will, word, wisdom, worthiness, ways.” It took entering a “wr” before it suggested verses about God’s wrath. It is safe to say that this aspect of God is not one of our favorite subjects!

We don’t like to talk about God’s wrath because it reminds us of our own wretchedness. But believe it or not, refusing to meditate properly on the wrath of God, will make it so that we never really understand his incredible love. When we ignore the truth of God’s wrath, we quickly forget that this is what we truly deserve. When we focus simply on God’s love, we might possibly begin to think we deserve this instead. Make no mistake, of the two, there is only one we have earned. We never truly appreciate the beautiful free gift of God’s perfect love that can never be earned until we understand that his wrath is actually what we deserve. God’s love is simply a nice sentiment if we forget about his righteous wrath. If we remember what our sins have wrought, then God’s love becomes something more incredible than we could ever imagine.

Almighty God, when I stand before You in my wretchedness, I can see only wrath in store for me. Heavenly Father, when I stand before You covered in the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, I am in awe of Your incredible love. Let me never forget what it is I have earned and what it is You have done to lovingly rescue me.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
