“You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord.” – Psalm 139:2-4
Communication is a vital part of a healthy relationship. Some of this has to do with the fact that you cannot read each other’s minds. But some of it is also about the bond that is built when we say out loud the things that we are already assured of. For instance, my wife and I often tell one another, “I love you.” After 27 years we have been through a great deal together. We have stuck by one another through thick and thin. There is no doubt in my mind that Stephanie loves me. Likewise, she has no doubt of my love for her. And yet, we say it all the time because vocalizing it speaks to our hearts and strengthens our bond. This is true of several aspects of our relationship. We know each other intimately, and yet voicing the things we are already sure of enriches our marriage.
In all your prayers, you will never tell God anything he does not already know. He is intimately aware of every thought that has ever crossed your mind. But do not let this fact keep you from pouring out your heart to him. It is that communication, even in telling him things he already knows, that strengthens your relationship with him. Voicing your fears, your frustrations, your excitement, and your awe draws you closer to him. Pouring out your heart creates intimacy. Pray unceasingly, hiding nothing from your loving heavenly Father, so that this communication might create beautiful communion.
Heavenly Father, we stand in awe that You know every thought. And we are amazed that You still desire to hear from us. Create a heart in us that longs to talk with You all throughout the day.
