“The seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven saying, ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever and ever.’” – Revelation 11:15

When I was a music major in college, we sang various selections from Handel’s Messiah one year. My favorite (and probably many people’s favorite) was the Hallelujah Chorus. It is that powerful moment when the music starts, the audience traditionally stands, and the choir loudly proclaims, “Hallelujah!” Though everyone remembers that part best, my favorite line was during one of the quieter sections of the song when it says, “the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ.” What a wonderful proclamation! Kingdoms have risen and fallen all throughout world history. Some have been incredibly evil, and some have been beacons of light, but not a single one has been perfect.

Yesterday marked another presidential election in the United States of America. These elections are incredibly important, because they affect not only our daily lives but also, to some extent, many other countries all over the world. As you wake up today you may be excited or incredibly discouraged with the results from yesterday. That is okay. We should care and we should invest in our country. However, we are first and foremost Christians. And that means that our number one concern should always be the eternal Kingdom that will come to take over every kingdom of this world. Make sure you invest much more time, energy, emotion, and prayer in the work of God that is happening every day than you do in the election that takes place every four years.

Lord, we praise You, magnify You, and worship You! The kingdoms of this world will all pass away, and Your Kingdom will be all that remains. Let our hearts and minds be constantly set on serving the everlasting Kingdom.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
