“The Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her.’” – Luke 10:41-42

After over 20 years in ministry and almost 35 years as a believer, I continue to find things in Scripture that challenge me and make me reevaluate where I am in my walk with Christ. This week I learned something new and, quite frankly, something very convicting; Jesus was never in a hurry. You can read through each Gospel, and you will never find Jesus frantically running around to get things done. Even though his mission was the most important mission in the history of the world and his time the most valuable time that any man has ever had, Jesus was never rushed. So why am I in such a hurry? Why am I so stressed all the time?

There is a story in Luke Chapter 10 where Jesus is invited into the house of Martha and Mary. Martha is rushing around with lots to do. Mary, on the other hand, chooses to sit at the feet of Jesus and spend time with him. In this passage, Jesus tells us that Mary has made the better choice. Jesus was never rushed or stressed because he had an intimate relationship with God. He knew that God’s timing was perfect and the most important thing in all life was to simply be with him. Stress comes from depending on yourself instead of your Savior. If you spend your whole day with Jesus instead of just trying to fit him into your schedule…if you talk with him about every little thing…then you will find yourself slowing down, calming down, and accomplishing what is most important in life instead of being enslaved by what is seemingly urgent.

Heavenly Father, set our eyes on Jesus in every big and little challenge in life. Don’t let the urgent things control us but teach us to give our time to what is most important. You sent Jesus to give us abundant life, not stressful life. Teach us to take hold of that life more and more every day.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
