“Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.” – Deuteronomy 4:9

In the Church we often talk about something called “spiritual disciplines.” Spiritual disciplines are intentional, consistent acts meant to strengthen us in our Christian walk. They include things like spending time in the Word, Scripture memorization, daily devotional time, meeting together for fellowship, and consistent prayer. Spiritual disciplines help us stay on guard against the schemes of the devil and they help us diligently watch ourselves so that we don’t become stagnant in our walk with Christ.

One important fruit of spiritual disciplines is that they keep us mindful of all God has done in our lives. When I hear people say things like “what has God done for me lately?,” or “it seems like God doesn’t really care about what I’m going through,” or “I do not really feel his presence in my life,” there is usually one thing these people all have in common; they are severely lacking in spiritual disciplines. If you are discouraged or lost or depressed or bitter, there is a good chance you’re standing at a distance from your Savior. You have forgotten all the amazing things he has done and so you do not have hope that he still has amazing things planned. One of the best ways to get out of this dark place is to commit to a life of spiritual discipline.

Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we have taken our relationship with You for granted and forgotten about Your incredible goodness. Reveal to us the places in our life that we are lacking spiritual discipline, convict us of that neglect, and empower us to change.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
