“It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:26-28

Entitlement is a big problem in our world today. We tend to expect service everywhere we go. Whether we are talking about our restaurants, our online stores, or our government, we expect the people around us to meet our needs. Unfortunately, this mindset is creeping into our homes, our churches, and our friendships. Much of the strife we experience in each of these areas can be traced back to this problem of entitlement. If everyone expects to be served, then everyone will live in constant frustration and disappointment with one another.

Jesus calls us to something greater. He calls us to go against our culture of entitlement and instead live a life of service. Jesus teaches us that the greatest life we can live is a life of serving those around us. In fact, one of the most tangible ways we can be like Jesus is to go about life looking for opportunities to bless others. This is the life Jesus lived. This is the reason he walked this earth. The One who is to be worshiped for all eternity, the Name that is above every name, did not step into this world to be served. He came to serve; to give his life to save ours. If you want to be like Jesus, then abandon entitlement and live a life of service to those around you. Serving others is what makes someone truly great.

Father, fill us with Your Holy Spirit and empower us to live like Jesus.
