“Do not call everything a conspiracy that these people say is a conspiracy. Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified. You are to regard only the Lord of Armies as holy. Only he should be feared; only he should be held in awe.” – Isaiah 8:12-13

We live in a time of overwhelming information. In that sea of information there are stories that could bring us joy, peace, laughter, and comfort. But for some reason, those are not the stories we are inundated with. More often than not we get bad news. That is because those in charge of the information have discovered that fear sells. There always seems to be some new crisis, some impending danger, or some evil doer that we should be afraid of. Conspiracies rule the day. We are taught to live in a constant state of anxiety over what hidden devil lurks behind all the bad that happens in our world.

Isaiah’s words from almost 3000 years ago hold great wisdom for us in this modern age. Don’t give in to the fear mongering. Don’t give in to the barrage of conspiracy theories. Don’t fear the things that everyone else fears because, when you do, you give all those things, and all those people, control over your life. There is only One we should fear. There is only One who has the ultimate power over our lives. No matter how big the corporation, how powerful the politician, or how secretive the organization, I stand in awe of God and God alone. From that truth comes a peace and confidence that allows us to rest secure in the midst of this chaotic world.

Almighty God, You are above all. You are the Alpha and Omega. All glory, honor, power, and wisdom belong to You. All of creation is in submission to You. Let our eyes be firmly fixed on You and let us never be coaxed into fearing the feeble rulers of this world.
