“But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.” – John 4:14
Everyone walks through this life “thirsty.” We thirst for encouragement, joy, peace, wisdom, community, purpose, and many other things. Because of that, people go from well to well looking for water…looking for something to quench the thirst they have. They find a drop here and a drop there; something to temporarily satisfy that longing. But eventually, they always end up thirsty again. This is because none of those wells can truly provide the endless supply we need. They all eventually run dry.
In John chapter 4, Jesus makes an incredible statement. He says that we will never have to thirst again. All those desires are met in him. He is the endless well that satisfies all our needs.
If that is true, then I have a convicting question for all of us believers: are you thirsty today? Are you struggling to find the encouragement, joy, peace, wisdom, community, and purpose you so desperately long for? If so, it is not because they are unavailable to you…if that were the case it would make Jesus a liar. The reason you are still thirsty is because you are not regularly drinking from the endless spring that is your Savior. The thirst-quenching Spirit lives within you and is ready at any moment to relieve your parched soul. Take a quiet moment with him, spend some time in prayer, read his Word. Take Jesus up on his offer and let him satisfy you today.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the bottomless well that is our Savior. Thank You for the spring of living water that is Your Spirit in us. Teach us to look to You in order to quench every thirst that arises in our lives.
