“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” – Philippians 3:7-8

Take a moment and look around you. Do you realize that everything around you is garbage? The cup you are drinking your coffee from, the clothes you are wearing, even the electronic device you are reading this devotion on will all be thrown away and probably end up in a landfill. People often criticize America for making everything disposable, and I would agree that we could learn to conserve better and not be so quick to throw things away. However, the truth is, we live in a disposable world. This world and everything in it is passing away. There are really only two things that we have today which we can take into eternity with us: our relationship with Christ, and our relationship with others who put their faith in Christ. So do not be so foolish to make your whole life about acquiring and enjoying garbage. Set your focus on Christ, and His mission. There is nothing wrong with having “stuff,” as long as that stuff serves the purpose of deepening our relationship with Christ and others. But remember, it is disposable: as soon as it no longer serves the purposes of Christ, it becomes garbage.

Father, help us to make good use of the resources we have, while we have them, for Your Kingdom. Never let us live a life of love for garbage instead of love for our Savior.

In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon <><
