“Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” – Proverbs 16:3
Yesterday a good friend stopped by my shop to give me a hand with an old 1972 F100 pickup truck I am restoring. As we talked, we shared stories of times we should have gone back and checked our work a little closer before heading out. We talked about how we have learned through the years to slow down and go over everything one more time, just to make sure we didn’t miss anything. If you have spent any amount of time working on cars, you have at least one or two stories of not tightening that bolt, not replacing this part, or forgetting to fill that fluid before hitting the road. Thankfully, none of our mistakes were catastrophic, but those instances will scare you into taking a thorough look at what you have done.
In Christian circles, we focus a lot on forgetting the past because of verses like Philippians 3:13 or Psalm 103:12. Though it is good to understand how far God has removed our sins from us and wiped away the mistakes of our past, this does not mean we should never reflect on where we have been and what we have done yesterday to be prepared for today. Take time to stop occasionally and make sure you are not missing anything. Are you spending time in the Word? Are you disciplined in prayer? Are your motives pure? Do you make fellowship with other believers a priority? Is God’s will your number one concern? Stop today and make sure all the bolts are tight, all the parts are in place, and all the fluids are topped-off before hitting the road. The last thing you want is to be unprepared for the journey ahead.
