“I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” – Malachi 3:6

God does not change. This truth is known in theological circles as God’s “immutability.” To say that God is immutable is to say that He does not mature or grow old; He does not learn new things or forget that which He has known; He does not gain or lose power or authority; God is unchanging. As A.W. Pink wrote, “He cannot change for the better, for he is already perfect; and being perfect, he cannot change for the worse.” This truth is incredibly hard for us to comprehend, because we live in a world of constant, and often chaotic, change.

However, it is vital for us to understand and believe this about God because of what the second half of Malachi 3:6 says: Our Salvation rests in God’s unchanging nature. He loves us and has saved us through His son, Jesus Christ. This love and salvation can never change because the God who promised it to us can never change. So today, rest in the peace that you are not destroyed, despite the chaos around you, because the God who promised to hold you for all eternity is faithful and powerful to deliver on that promise.

Lord, let us always be mindful of the fact that our Salvation is held in your unchanging, all-powerful hands and it is in no way affected by the shifting sands of our world or the constantly changing whims of our own hearts.

In Christ’s Service,
