“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So, it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8
Today I sat in the park and listened to the wind, watching it blow through the leaves on the trees. It reminded me of John 3:8. Jesus compares the Spirit of God to the wind. There is a mystery to the way the Spirit moves. We can’t see it. We don’t know when it will come and when it will go. But we see the effects in people’s lives. We see lives and hearts changed. We see people born again. Their motives and priorities are completely turned around. We never see the Spirit, but we clearly know the Spirit has been at work.
As we think about this comparison, there is also a mistake we often make. When I sat today and watched the leaves quaking in the trees it seemed as if it was all random, with no rhyme or reason. But I know that not one of those leaves moves apart from the will of our Father. We need to understand that this also applies to the Spirit of God. It often seems very random and unexpected how the Spirit moves. However, we know that every bit of it happens under the watchful eye and will of the God over all creation.
Heavenly Father, let your Spirit fall on us, fill us, and do a mighty work among us. Let us see the powerful effects of your mysterious Spirit.
