“Wisdom and strength belong to God; counsel and understanding are his…He makes nations great, then destroys them; he enlarges nations, then leads them away.” – Job 12:13, 23
In a few days we will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. This “experiment” that the rest of the world thought would only last a generation or two has become the most powerful nation on earth. There are many things we can contribute the success of our country to; our foundation on Biblical truths, an emphasis on the intrinsic value of individual human beings, the brilliance of our founding fathers and the system of government they created, or the vastness and diversity of our land, just to name a few. But ultimately, there is one reason, and one reason alone, for America’s success…
Job 12 makes it very clear that God himself makes nations great and destroys them. No matter how brilliant the system of government, no matter how rich the resources, and no matter how powerful the military, none of those things override the sovereignty of God. I love our country. I am so proud of our accomplishments. It is an unimaginable blessing to be born and raised in the incredible freedom and abundance that the United States of America provides. But as you celebrate the amazing milestone of our 250th anniversary this July 4th, remember to thank God. It is because of him, and him alone, that our country has flourished. And it will be because of him, and him alone, that our country thrives on into the future.
God, we thank You for the radiant light that the United States of America has been. It is in America that Your Church has flourished unlike anywhere else in the world. It is from America that You have sent your missionaries out into every corner of the world. If it pleases You, Father, let our country continue to flourish. Protect us from the schemes of Satan and make us a light for Your Kingdom long into the future.
