“God is faithful; by Him you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1:9

All of us, at one time or another, have probably struggled with finding our purpose. Why are we on this earth? What plan does God have for our life? In Christian circles, we have a tendency to refer to this as our “calling,” and 1 Corinthians 1:9 tells us exactly what that calling is. Though it is true that God has a unique plan for each one of us, we often forget that our ultimate purpose is the same; we are all called into fellowship with God through Jesus Christ. Our first and primary purpose in life is to know God intimately. From the very beginning of the Bible, God created man in His own image to walk and talk with Him in the Garden of Eden. And the climax of the story is when God Himself makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to restore the relationship that we have broken. Yes, God created us because He deeply desires a relationship with us! The mistake we often make is that we allow “sub-purposes,” and sometimes even contradictory purposes, to take priority over this ultimate purpose. Are you chasing after all the things of the world and not finding fulfillment? Are you searching and searching for God’s calling for you, but coming up empty handed each time? Make sure that you are first and foremost pursuing your relationship with God. It is only under this ultimate purpose that your unique purpose in life will come to light.

Lord, fill us with a passion to know You deeply and intimately. Then let every other purpose in our life be in submission to, and develop strength and clarity from, that ultimate purpose.

In Christ’s Service,
