“But the angel said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.’” – Luke 2:10-11

I am currently teaching one of my daughters to drive. Whenever you teach someone to drive, one of the more difficult tasks is teaching them how to smoothly navigate long corners on highways or major roads. The tendency is to look at the line next to you and continually correct as you go, jerking the wheel, trying to stay close to that line. But the key to making a nice smooth corner is to look where you want to go. You look through the corner, to the end. As you do that, your movements will naturally follow, and you will find yourself making the perfect input into the steering wheel to direct you right where you want to be.

This same idea applies to our walk with Christ. The question we must always ask is, “where are your eyes focused.” If you are constantly looking at the world around you, you will be nervous, always trying to avoid running off course. Just reading the daily news will give you great anxiety. However, if you keep your eyes on Christ – continuing to study the Word, pray, meet with him, and grow closer to him – you will find that you end up right where you need to be. I have good news for you; Christ has come into the world! He does not remain at a distance but has offered his Holy Spirit to anyone who chooses to put their faith in him. So don’t be afraid, just keep your eyes on him and you will be able to correctly navigate this broken world. As Selwyn Hughes says, “Because you have Him, instead of saying, ‘look what the world has come to,’ you will be able to say, ‘look what has come into the world.”!

Heavenly Father, teach us to keep our eyes on You. We know, especially this time of year, that you have sent Jesus to teach us, save us, guide us, and walk with us. Let the fears of this world fade away as we learn to look to him.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
