“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” – Psalm 77:11-12
One of the more common commands that appears throughout the Old Testament is the command to “remember.” Over and over again, especially in the face of uncertainty or danger, God calls on his people to remember what he has done for them in the past so that they might have strength for the future. The close of 2017 is a great opportunity to do just that. We have the opportunity to stop and recall all that God has done for us; every victory, every time he has healed or delivered, every softly spoken word in our quiet times with him. As this year draws to a close I would encourage you to take time and remember what the Lord has done.
Why is this command so important? Because when we practice it, it allows us to then obey what is actually the most common command in the entire Bible: “Do not be afraid.” I don’t know what 2018 holds for you or for me, and it is easy to enter the New Year with trepidation and fear. However, when we take time to remember all that God has done for us in the past, we have a renewed sense of strength to overcome our fears and carry us into the future.
Mighty God, please take this time to recall to our memories all You have done for us in the past, and through that, give us the strength and courage to step boldly into the future.
