“Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.” – Galatians 6:9
Colorado has been experiencing a drought this year. Listening to the news, it sounded like it would be catastrophic. This concerned me because the area I live in is known for its crops, especially the famous “Pueblo Chili.” So, I asked a farmer friend of mine how this was affecting him. This question led to a simple, but eye-opening exchange: He said, “Have you looked at my field?” “Yes,” I replied. “Did you see green coming up out of the ground?” “Yes,” I replied. “Then I guess we’re doing okay.” I loved his perspective. He plants every year, he waters, he takes care of the weeds, and then he gathers the crops. Sometimes there is more, sometimes there is less. Sometimes the harvest comes quickly, sometimes it takes longer. But the only sure way to fail is to give up.
We live in a world of instant results. You can know the answer to almost any question by talking to a box in your hand. We get frustrated if an online order takes more than 24 hours to arrive. You can have food on your doorstep in less than an hour. In that world, patience isn’t required. And where patience isn’t required, the ability to persevere is completely lost. But working for God’s Kingdom is much more like farming. You can get frustrated with the weather, the bugs, the water, the weeds, and any number of other things. It is hard and it takes time. But the only sure way to fail is to give up. If you go in expecting instant results, every day will feel like a failure. But if you are in it for the long-haul, knowing it is not just the daily work, but the perseverance in the work, that produces a crop, then you have the right mindset to see the bountiful harvest that God can produce through you.
Lord, give us the ability to have a perseverance mindset in an instant gratification world.
