“Remember the wondrous works he has done, his wonders, and the judgments he has pronounced.” – 1 Chronicles 16:12
Today I had a lot of driving to do. So, to pass the time, I decided to listen to the sermons that some of my friends preached at our church while I was on sabbatical. As the playlist continued, the sermon I preached upon returning from sabbatical came up. As I listened to it, I was amazed (and ashamed) at how much I had already forgotten about what God had taught me during my time away. During my sabbatical God made a very big impact on my life in several ways, and yet, I had let many of those lessons fade into the back of my mind.
We all think that those big revelations, those “aha moments,” and those amazing miracles that God performs in our life will always be in the forefront of our minds. But the truth is, we move on with everyday life and other things get in the way. God knows this about us. That is why we are commanded to “remember” well over 350 times in the Scripture. Remembering is not something that just happens naturally, but it is something you must put effort into. Thankfully, as I listened to that sermon, I remembered that I have a detailed journal from my time on sabbatical…a journal I plan on going back to visit this week. I want to make sure that I put serious effort into remembering how God was working during that time in my life. I encourage you today; find ways to obey the command to “remember.” Find very functional and intentional ways to make sure you always remember what God has done, and is doing, in your life.
God, give us the wisdom to be intentional about remembering. Teach us to obey the command to keep your goodness before us at all times.
