“Keep your life free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for he himself has said, I will never leave you or abandon you. Therefore, we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” – Hebrews 13:5-6

We tend to only read the first half of Hebrews 13:5 and then try to live out that teaching. We say, “I should not desire to have more and better things. I should just be satisfied with the house, car, clothes, and job I already have.” And this is true, we should not live a life coveting what others have. But there is a much deeper truth in these verses; we should not desire “things” at all! We are called to find our contentment in one place and only one place; the fact that Christ will never leave us or forsake us. The point is not that we should be satisfied with what little we have, the point is that we should be satisfied with Christ and nothing else!

Being completely content in Christ then leads us to the beautiful blessing of v.6, “I will not be afraid!” There is nothing that man can do to me to take away the greatest and most perfect blessing of an eternity sealed for me by Jesus himself. So, when you find yourself desiring more money, thinking that life would be better and more peaceful if you had more stuff, or fearing how other people may affect your future security, take a moment and remember who it is that truly holds your security in his hands.

Lord, we desire to be satisfied, at peace, and secure as we live our lives here on earth. Today we recognize that only Jesus can provide that. Give us the wisdom to begin every day by looking to him to meet our true and deepest needs. Father, satisfy us with Christ and Christ alone.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Shane Cannon
