“That whole generation was also gathered to their ancestors. After them another generation rose up who did not know the Lord or the works he had done for Israel. The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. They worshiped the Baals and abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They angered the Lord.” – Judges 2:10-12
This week my wife and I were discussing the fact that we now live in a post-Christian culture. People growing up in America today, for the most part, have no knowledge of the Bible or the Church. The decisions our government makes, the things our children are taught in school, and the way people live their daily lives have no basis in Scripture because there is no knowledge of Scripture. The Church is angry with the decisions made by those around us, but we forget that they have no understanding of God on which to base their decisions.
Judges 2:10 is a shocking passage. At this point in the story God had visited the plagues on Egypt to free his people, he had parted the Red Sea to rescue his people, and he had torn down the walls of Jericho to give victory to his people. But within two generations the people of Israel knew nothing about their God. So, I ask you, whose fault was that? Those who had walked closely with God and seen the incredible working of his hand had failed miserably at sharing all of that with their children.
Today we live in a post-Christian culture because we have failed to share the greatness of our God. Just as in Judges 10:12, the Lord is angered by the evil that is so prevalent in our world. But it is our job to change that. The people around us cannot know, love, and follow a God they have never heard of. Tell them about all he has done for you!
Mighty God, spur us on, equip us, and empower us to be effective heralds proclaiming the mighty power and amazing grace of our Father.
