The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” – “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. – Mark 1:1-4

It is that time of year, when I see all of my neighbors climbing all over their houses and hanging lights and decorations from every corner. And it is that time of year, when I see signs and hear commercials everywhere about the incredible deals that are happening for the holidays. People are stocking up on presents, preparing for parties, and making travel plans. Everywhere you look, people are getting ready for Christmas. But there is one preparation we may often miss. Are we prepared to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas?

Before God sent His son into the world, he first sent John the Baptist to prepare the way. To do this, John preached a message of repentance. This message consisted of a call to recognize sin, turn away from it, and run toward God. This was so important, because the answer to sin and death was entering the world; the One and Only Way to be saved from condemnation was about to be revealed! The last thing God wanted was for people to be unprepared…to miss this incredible opportunity to be saved.

So as we prepare for all the festivities of Christmas, I would encourage you to prepare your heart as well. As we get ready to celebrate the Messiah coming into the world, take a moment, recognize your sins, confess them to Him, and be forgiven. Don’t let your house be full of Christmas cheer while your heart is empty of true spiritual joy this Christmas.

Almighty God, as we prepare for the Christmas season, please work in our hearts to prepare us to properly recognize the amazing gift of Jesus Christ.
In Christ’s Service,
Pastor Shane Cannon <><
