“If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen its edge, then one must exert more strength; however, the advantage of wisdom is that it brings success.” – Ecclesiastes 10:10

The work God calls us to do as His hands and feet in this broken world is not easy. Whether it is volunteering for ministry at your church, helping those in need, going on a mission trip, or simply sharing Jesus with a coworker, none of it is simple or effortless. Sometimes, we even feel like we are working and working, but getting nothing done. If you are finding yourself worn out and frustrated, the problem might not be the work in front of you, but the way you are preparing to accomplishing it.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” We are the tools God uses to accomplish His will here on earth. But so often we work frantically without ever stopping to sharpen our edge. This is the reason that things like corporate worship, Bible study, prayer, and personal devotion are so important. Without these things keeping us sharp, we will get frustrated at the time and effort it takes, and lack of progress we make, in the work before us. God has eternally significant work for you to do; and it is because of that truth that we need to step away at times, spend time with our Father and church family, and sharpen ourselves for the task that lies ahead.

Father, give us the wisdom to step away with You and be sharpened for the work that lies in front of us.

In Christ’s Service,
