“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” – Romans 8:31

If you are feeling afraid or discouraged today, one of two things has probably happened; you have either forgotten God’s promises, or you have forgotten God’s power. Romans 8:31 contains the assumption that we remember God’s promises when it states; “If God is for us.”  The first question we need to ask ourselves is, “Do I believe God is for me?…do I believe His promises?” In His word, God tells us, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) The Bible also clearly declares, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) And just in case you have trouble believing all this, let me ad Romans 8:32, “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” So take a moment, memorize these verses, and constantly remind yourself of God’s promises.

However, it is possible that you remember and believe God’s promises, but you are still struggling with fear and discouragement. I would submit to you that maybe you have forgotten God’s power. Again, Romans 8:31 contains the assumption that we know the omnipotence of God when it says, “Who can be against us?” You see, a promise is only as good as the power of the one who is going to fulfill that promise. If you are struggling with remembering God’s power, I would encourage you to take a moment and read the end of the book of Job (Chapters 38 – 42) and remind yourself of God’s incredible power. Then, you will be able to confidently answer the questions, “Who can be against us?” with the powerful truth, “No one!”

Loving and powerful Father, keep your promises and your power ever before us so that we have the strength and peace to walk confidently in this dark world.
